Spatial variability of precipitation extremes over Italy using a fine-resolution gridded product

Italy. Knowing magnitude and frequency of extreme precipitation is necessary to reduce their impact on vulnerable areas. Here we investigate the performance Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution, using a fine-resolution satellite-based gridded product, analyze 13,247 daily rainfall annual maxima samples. A non-extreme value distribution with power-type behavior, that is, Burr Type XII (BrXII), also evaluated used test reliability GEV in describing rainfall. (1) 44.9 % analyzed samples predicts an upper limit; deem this artifact due sample variations; (2) suggest GEV+ shape parameters restricted only positive values as more consistent model complying nature precipitation; (3) GEV, GEV+, BrXII performed equally well observed precipitation, yet all distributions underestimate maximum; (4) BrXII, for large return periods, larger amounts compared indicating estimates could risk extremes; (5) correlation between predicted elevation investigated. Based results study, instead classical use such describe extremes.
